It has been many months since we last went cafe-hopping so Mariem and I decided to meet up on the day she ends work early for probably our last cafe-hopping expedition of 2016.
Flavour Fling is the epitome of a trend-setting cafe; it is the first cafe in Singapore that started selling Salted Egg Croissant, and now it is the first cafe to introduce raclette, the French dish of melted cheese.
We didn’t realise that the cafe closes at 4 pm (the kitchen closes at 3.15pm) and we arrived at 3.30pm, hot and perspiring like a fountain. We ended up waiting 2 hours for the cafe to reopen for dinner.
The cafe offers both indoor air-conditioned sitting and outdoor alfresco sitting.
It’s a cosy little cafe with wooden tables and chairs, complete with warm orange lighting.
The menu is not extensive, a mix of classic cafe favourites such Scrambled Eggs on Toast and Carbonara Pasta and new introductions such as RacletteSant and Beef Steak with Raclette.
This is the Salted Egg Croissant that brought about the salted egg croissant craze in Singapore. Sadly, it is not as fantastic as I expected. The salted egg filling has the distinct grainy texture of salted egg but it is not creamy enough.
RacletteSant is the combination of Salted Egg Croissant with melted raclette cheese. The scrapping of the melted cheese is really entertaining and stomach-whetting, but the raclette cheese has totally overpowered the salted egg croissant so the only thing I can taste is the raclette cheese.
Beef Steak with Raclette tastes almost as good as the scraping-melted-cheese performance. The beef steak, which is of medium-rare doneness, is tender and juicy. The cheese complements the beef, giving the beef a nice touch of saltiness.
Finish off your meal with sweet endings such as Creme Brulee. The custard is rich and creamy, not too sweet and simply plain delicious with a crackling caramelized top. The portion is just nice for one person.
There is always something new at Flavor Fling, the staff are friendly and the food is good. If only it is not located at such a hidden location surrounded by HBDs, I would be their most loyal customer.
