Eat at Seven: Tonkatsu Agedoki

Eat at Seven at level 3 of Suntec City Mall features 7 of Japan’s best and trending specialist concept restaurants are brought into Singapore by Global Retail Partners, a joint venture by ANA Trading, Komars Group and local restaurateur Mr Andrew Tan who owns Tomo F&B Group.
Japanese cuisine is one of my favourite cuisines, so I am going to dedicate the whole of December to the review of these 7 restaurants.

My colleague went to Tonkatsu Agedoki and he was full of praises of the Curlet of Prawns Wrapped with Pork, claiming that it is the best tonkatsu he has ever eaten. Let’s go and try this special tonkatsu and see if it lives up to the praise.

I like the concise menu with only 6 items.

This restaurant uses Hokkaido rice, which is known for its fragrant aroma.

A huge bowl of chopped lettuce is served as an appetizer, alongside other nibbles.

Thick Slice Pork Loin Cutlet Set Meal is the juicier version while Thick Slice Pork Cutlet Set Meal is leaner. The cutlet is pretty dry and tasteless, a vast difference from the juicy meat I had at Tonkatsu by Ma Maison (Westgate) and Saboten (Millenia Walk and IMM outlets).

This is the Cutlet of Wrapped Prawns with Pork Set Meal which my colleague was raving about, but it has not won me over. I agree that wrapping is pork around a prawn and frying it as a tonkatsu is an ingenious idea, but it lacked the explosion of flavours that I was anticipating. The prawn is too small to give the sweetness that is needed and the pork is too thick that it overpowers the prawn.

Tonkatsu Agedoki is the sister restaurant of long-queue Tempura Kohaku and they share the same kitchen although the staff explained that they use different frying machines. This is one restaurant that is not suitable for a hurried lunch as there is a cooking time of at least 15-20 minutes, and that can sometimes stretch up to half an hour or more.
