I was at the stretch of eateries opposite Beauty World during dinner time and every restaurant was bursting with people so I ended up having dinner at Ding Tele Shanghai Panfried Dumpling.
Ding Te Le Shanghai Panfried Dumpling specialises in Shanghainese cuisine and is especially known for their shengjian bao.
The Food
[S$6.20] is a classic Shanghainese cold dish. The roasted gluten is tossed with citron daylily, black fungus and fried peanuts. It is a fragrant and swim sweet dish that works great as an appetiser.
[S$9.30] is supposed to be sweet and sour but I could only taste the sweetness. It’s nice but it get a little too cloying after a few pieces.
Shengjian bao is a type of small pan-fried Chinese bun that is a specialty of Shanghai. Ding Tele’s Signature Pan-Fried Crispy Pork Soup Buns 招牌生煎 (4 pieces) [S$6.20] is filled with pork filling and soup that burst into your mouth. It is small enough to be popped into your mouth, but I find it slightly sweet.
Shanghai is also famous for xiao long bao which is known as Signature Steamed Pork & Soup Bun (5 pieces) [S$6.20] at Ding Tele. It is not quite a good as Ding Tai Fung’s Steamed Pork Dumpling.
The simple Vegetable & Pork Wonton in Soup [S$8.20] is a welcome respite from the overwhelming sweetness that is characteristic of Shanghainese cuisine. The wontons are huge and each is packed with generous filling of vegetable and pork filling.
[S$6.20] is a specialty dessert from the jiangnan region and it is very popular in Shanghai. Soft glutinous rice balls are cooked in fermented glutinous rice wine, giving this dessert a fragrant aroma and sweet taste.
Conclusion
Ding Tele Shanghai Panfried Dumpling is a good restaurant to try out authentic Shanghainese cuisine such as shengjian bao, wheat gluten, wonton and fermented rice dumpling.
