I recently saw a video on TikTok talking about a Japanese restaurant that sells handmade sushi starting from S$1. I thought it’s too good to be true so I decided to visit JUNRYO and find out for myself.
JUNRYO is a tiny Japanese restaurant in Orchard Plaza. It’s a little challenging to find the place, just keep a lookout for this red wall with wooden door and half-circular window.
Inside, there are only 8 counter seats so you can see your sushi being prepared. There are only 2 people in the restaurant, Chef Samuel Lau and a Filipino staff.
JUNRYO offers 40 handmade sushi with prices ranging from S$1 to S$10 a piece. Each piece of sushi is handmade by Chef Samuel Lau right in front of you, with premium ingredients flown in from Japan. Even for the S$1 sushi such as Tamago [S$1], care is put into every detail.
My favourite is Hotate [S$4] where the sweetness of the scallop tells me how fresh it is. Kanapachi [S$4] and Chutoro [S$6] are strong contenders as are the premium sushi such as Uni Gunkan [S$10] and Aburi Hotate with Otoro [S$10].
When the sushi is this good, it’s very easy to overeat and rack up a huge bill, but it’s worth every cent. I think I have found my favourite sushi restaurant.
