WHEAT, originally known as Wheat Baumkuchen, started off as a speciality shop in Toa Payoh that sells locally-made Baumkuchen alongside soba and brown rice. The soba and brown rice dishes were so well-received that they have decided to re-brand themselves as WHEAT, offering affordable soba, brown rice and salad sets at 5 locations in Singapore.
I didn’t know that WHEAT had recently opened a new outlet at the basement of Raffles City Shopping Centre until my colleague told me repeatedly to try out a new restaurant that sells “very nice set meals”. Intrigued, I followed her to lunch one day and there it is WHEAT.
The menu consists of soba, brown rice and salad meals, served in 100% biodegradable sugar cane fibre boxes. The dishes are given cute animal names, but the names mostly don’t correspond with what is being served.
Salmon is the most popular dish at WHEAT. Green soba is served with a piece of grilled salmon and a bed of salad topped with mushrooms. The green soba is specially imported from Japan, it is a little chewier than your regular soba, which goes well with the grilled salmon. I personally find that the salmon might be a little over-cooked as the meat is a little tough, but my colleagues absolutely adore it. Do note that the ingredients may not be very consistent especially during hectic lunch hour when they forgot the mushrooms for my colleagues and I there was a subtle wasabi taste in my green soba, which my colleagues did not taste on the first time but did on the second time.
Bull Run has nothing to do with beef, it is teriyaki chicken served with green soba and salad. Teriyaki chicken is well-marinated and the green soba thankfully did not have any wasabi in it. It is an easy and healthy lunch that has only 479 calories.
Most of the WHEAT’s meals are priced below $10, but if you want to pamper yourself a little, there are premium dishes available such as Striploin. Beefsteak is served with green soba and salad. You will have to wait for about 10-15 minutes for them to cook your steak, but you will not regret it. I am utterly amazed that the beef steak can be so juicy even though it is well-done. At just 496 calories, it is healthy and delicious.
