Shan Dong Dong Ji La Mian Xiao Long Bao - Stall Front

My girlfriend has been recommending me a coffeeshop stall in Jurong East that sells cheap and tasty Chinese steamed dumplings.

When I was in Jurong East a few days ago, I decided to check the stall out for myself.

All of Shan Dong Dong Ji La Mian Xiao Long Bao’s dumplings are freshly-made in the stall. No matter what time you visit, you will see the workers making the dumplings by hand.

Shan Dong Dong Ji La Mian Xiao Long Bao - Sahandong Dumplings

This is the Shangdong Dumplings 山东水饺 [S$5 for 12] that my girlfriend has been raving to me about. The dumpling skin is thin and packed full with fillings.

You can also get frozen dumplings at S$30 for 15 pieces, handmade upon order.

Shan Dong Dong Ji La Mian Xiao Long Bao - Dumpling/Wanton Noodle

If dumplings alone is not enough for you, you can also order Dumpling/Wanton Noodle 水饺面/云吞面 [S$4]. I find the noodles a little too soft for my liking, but I like the price.

I decided to try their Shanghai Xiao Long Bao 上海小笼包 [S$4 for 6], but it turned out to be quite a disappointment. There isn’t much juice in the xiao long bao and the skin breaks easily. The filling is all pork, which makes me feel queasy after a few bites. It definitely cannot be compared with Din Tai Fung’s Steamed Pork Dumplings, but it is will do for a cheap snack.

Shan Dong Dong Ji La Mian Xiao Long Bao - Bei Jing Sauce Noodle

Bei Jing Snack Noodle 老北京炸酱面 [S$4] hits all the right notes. The noodles are springy and there is ample sauce to coat all the noodles. My only complaint is the black bean sauce is a little too salty.

Shan Dong Dong Ji La Mian Xiao Long Bao - Scallion Cake

Scallion Cake 葱油饼 [S$3.50] is a popular snack in Shan Dong, China. It is a type of flat pie filled with scallion oil and chopped scallions. It is supposed to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Shan Dong Dong Ji La Mian Xiao Long Bao’s scallion cake is a little too floury and thick.
