I have been binge-watching this Korean YouTuber Tzuyang, it’s amazing how much this petite girl can eat in one seating! There was one video where she ate gejang which is Korean marinated crab. I have had my fair share of Korean food but I have never had gejang in Singapore. A search online revealed that only two restaurants in Singapore serves this exotic Korean delicacy. One is Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant and the other is The GoGiJip Korean BBQ.
The way Tzuyang eats the gejang makes it look so delicious so I decided to try it out for myself.
Besides gejang, there are other things I want to try at The GoGiJip Korean BBQ, so I decided to visit Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant alone.
Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant – Interior
The interior of Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant gives off a warm homey feeling with brown-color tables, chairs and separators. The orange fluorescent lights and bricks walls accentuates the homey atmosphere. It feels like I have just stepped into a rustic Korean countryside house.
Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant – The Food
I came here especially for the gejang, Korean soy-sauce marinated crabs.
This is the first time I am trying Korean marinated crabs, I’m not sure how well I will like the taste. I was worried that the a la carte Gan-Jan-Ge-Jang [S$45] might be too big a portion for me, so I got the Gan-Jan-Ge-Jang lunch set [S$25] instead. The lunch set comes with free-flow banchan, a soup and a small plate of the marinated crabs.
The marination process has broken down the tissue fibers so the crab meat becomes gel-like. Just take half of the crab, press the body and squeeze out the meat.
I actually quite like the taste of gejang. It’s slightly salty from marinated in soy sauce with a slight fishy taste. This is an acquired taste, not everyone is going to like it. The slight fishy taste doesn’t really bother me. Mixing it with rice and a little of the marination sauce make it taste even better.
Do remember to dig out the golden roe from the body and top of the shell. This is the best part of the crab! Eat it with rice and marination sauce, you will love it!
There is also the spicy Yang-Nyeom-Ge-Jang [S$45] but I heard it’s really spicy, I didn’t even dare to try it.
Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant is a barbecue restaurant after all, it feels wrong not to order some meats. I looked though the menu, there was nothing special except this Wagyu Prime Beef Ribs [S$45].
It’s a little pricey but it’s worth every cent. The staff cooked it to perfection and left them at the end of the grill to keep warm. Even though it is throughly cooked, the meat is still so tender and juicy. It doesn’t get any better than this.
Conclusion
Come down to Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant for gan-jan ge-jang (Korean marinated crab) or yang-nyeom ge-jang (spicy Korean marinated crab). For Korean barbecue, Wagyu Prime Beef Ribs is the best.
If you stay in the west of Singapore, O.BBa Jjajang & BBQ opposite Beauty World Centre is another superb Korean restaurant.
