Penang Place Restaurant (Suntec City)

After the Penang Street outlet at Funan DigitaLife Mall moved to god-knows-where when the mall closed for renovations, my colleagues and I missed their tasty Penang dishes.
When this new Penang restaurant opened in Suntec City Mall, we decided to check it out so we made a book, and here we are!

Whatever Penang dish you can think of, they can make it! There are easily over 100 items in this menu and 30 items will be selected at random from this list for the restaurant’s lunch and dinner buffet.

This is the counter dedicated to Penang Hokkien Mee and Penang Assam Laksa. You can choose to do it yourself with clear instructions to guide you through the entire cooking process or you can get the friendly staff to cook it for you. I like the tangy taste of the laksa and the broth of the Hokkien mee is really flavorful.

The cooked foods we had were Harluk Prawns, Beef Rendang, Ikan Pari Assam Pedas (Sour and Spicy Stingray), Chicken Curry, Penang Char Kway Teow and Fried Buns to dip into the gravies. The prawns were very well-marinated, the stingray is spicy but still manageable, the kway teow is tasty and the chicken pieces in the chicken curry are generous and tender. Beef Rendang is the winner among the cooked foods with flavorful rendang sauce and quality cut of meat (which I believe to be beef brisket).

There is Lobak (deep fried five-spiced chicken roll wrapped in bean curd skin) accompanied by a pot of simmering gravy, Choon Piah, Fried Chicken Wings, Seaweed Chicken, Curry Puffs and Fried Tofu in the fried foods section.

Salted Egg Bao is a total disappointment because the bao skin is way too thick and the salted egg filling is a paste instead of being runny. You can skip this and save your stomach for all the other gorgeous foods.

Siew Mai is picture-some but too floury. The yellow-coloured siew mai are prawn siew mai and the green-coloured ones have vegetarians fillings.

Nasi Lemak with condiments such as peanuts, floss, ikan bilis, ladies finger, cucumber slices and chilli paste.

You can make your own Penang Fruit Rojak at this station.

There are mixed salads such as Mesclun Salad and Mango Kerabu (Spicy Sweet and Sour Green Mango Salad), or you can make your own salad with the ingredients provided such as cherry tomatoes, century egg, acar (vegetable pickle) and homemade coleslaw.

Chicken Satay is definitely one of the signatures at Penang Place Restaurant. The chicken is tender and very well-marinated, I can taste the sweetness in every bite. There are not many places that make such good satay in Singapore nowadays.

End the amazing Penang buffet on a sweet note with Mango Pudding, Gui Leng Gao with Honey and cut fruits in the chiller, make your own Ice Kachang and Chendol, or have a slice of Steamed Tapioca Kueh, Pulut Taitai with Kaya and Kueh Talam, or Cheng T’ng and Bubur Cha Cha from the black spots at the right side of the table.
Although the buffet is a little lacking in variety (there are only 30 dishes), the quality of the food more than makes up for it. The buffet prices are reasonable and the staff are very friendly. I am in love with Penang Place Restaurant!
Penang Place Restaurant also provides catering service for a minimum of 30 people priced at $29/person. You can customize your own catering menu, choosing from over 100 items on the menu. You can also hire a chef to fry Char Kway Teow on the spot with additional charge starting from $250 per chef. I shall remember to cater to Penang Place Restaurant.
Penang Place Restaurant may not have official halal certification but all meats served in Penang Place Restaurant are sourced from halal sources so Muslim friends should have no problem dining here.
