Sundubu is a type of Korean stew featuring tofu cooked with a variety of ingredients such as vegetables, meat and seafood.
This humble Korean dish gained popularity after a Korean immigrant opened a restaurant in Los Angeles specializing in sunbudu.
Sundubu is said to be one of the beauty secrets of Korean ladies as tofu is high in protein but low in calories, capsaicin from the red pepper paste used in the stew enhances metabolism while the collagen-rich soup is good for the skin.
Tokoyo Sundubu, which is located at the basement of Raffles City Shopping Mall is the first restaurant in Singapore that specializes in sundubu. There are 24 types of sundubu, I am sure there is something for everyone.
All meals come with this cute bib that makes sure your clothes stay clean as you slurp away.
Wagyu Beef is a special promotion to celebrate the opening of the Raffles City outlet. I chose the lowest level of spiciness, it looked fiery red but I was pleasantly surprised that it was not spicy at all! In fact, the red pepper paste actually makes the stew more flavorful. The pieces of wagyu beef are of just the right texture and it tastes great with tofu, egg, clams and chopped green onions.
Sundubu is served piping hot in a stone bowl, which makes it an excellent meal to have on a cold rainy day. If you are still not convinced, come down and try it for yourself.
