I first noticed Xi Men Jie 西门街 in the basement of Westgate, and then again in Funan Mall. A search on Google reveals that Xi Men Jie is actually a chain restaurant with 8 outlets in different parts of Singapore.

The Food

Braised Pork Rice 卤肉饭 is the most classic of Taiwanese cuisine. I find Xi Men Jie’s version a little salty and the pork a little too lean but otherwise still acceptable.

Another classic Taiwanese food is Oyster Mee Sua 蚵仔面线. The three pieces of oysters on top of the mee sua are plump and juicy while the mee sua is thick and silky.

Onion pancakes is a popular snack in Taiwan. Xi Men Jie offers a premium version with cheese and egg, Cheese Onion Egg Pancake 芝士葱油蛋饼. There is pork floss inside the egg onion pancake t00, which adds another dimension to the taste and texture.

I thought Salted Egg Crispy Squid Rings 咸蛋黄炸花枝 will be coated in tantalizing salted egg sauce, but it’s just fried squid rings with salted egg powder. This is such a disappointment, do not order this.

Sour Plum Sweet Potato Fries 酸梅粉地瓜条 is another popular Taiwanese snack. The sweet potato fries are sweet with a crunchy exterior and the sour plum power balances the flavor.

Xi Men Jie collaborates with Tea Sense to provide milk teas such as this Boba Milk Tea which is not as nice as Tiger Sugar.

Conclusion

Xi Men Jie is perfect for satisfying cravings for Taiwanese cuisine and snacks. While a few dishes might not be up to standard, most of the items are pretty authentic in taste.
