My stomach has been a little sensitive for the past few days. I wanted to have something soupy for lunch and a colleague recommended fish soup from Xin Wah Kee.
Although Xin Wah Kee’s Chinese name 新華記 is the same as the popular Hong Kong cha chaang teng 新華記, they are not the same restaurant. Hong Kong 新華記’s English translation is New Wah Kee Restaurant.
I was pleasantly surprised how delicious Toman Fish Soup [S$6.80] tuned out to be. The fish soup is not as robust as Yan Ji Seafood Soup, but nevertheless very rich and tasty.
The chicken in Herbal Chicken Soup [S$11.60] is very well-marinated and the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender, but the soup is super thick. It is more like sauce than soup.
I thought Xin Wah Kee only sells soups, but it also has Braised Pork Rice [S$7.10]. Braised pork rice, which is otherwise known as lu rou fan, is a popular rice dish from Taiwan. The pork are tender and well-marinated with bits of cartilage which gives it a nice bite.
I also tried their Fried Prawn Paste Chicken [S$5.80 for 2 pieces]. I like the slight sourness which balances out the oiliness from the chicken.
Xin Wah Kee is a nice little shop that sells soups and a few other tasty Chinese bites.
