It has been many months since I last had northeastern Chinese food at Dong Bei Ren Jia 东北人家 and Dong Bei Xiao Chu 东北小厨. I decided to satisfy my craving for northeastern Chinese food at a restaurant I have been eyeing on – BBQ Box 串烧工坊.
As the name implies, BBQ Box specializes in barbecue. In particular, they specialize in northeastern Chinese style of barbecue. BBQ Box has 3 outlets located in Geylang, Bugis and Chinatown.
BBQ Box (Geylang)
BBQ Box’s Geylang outlet is their first outlet. It is decorated in mechanical design with brick walls and engine art on the walls.
The brown wooden tables and black chairs are widely spaced apart, in accordance with Covid-19 safe distancing measures.
The restaurant looks clean and tidy, I am liking the place so far.
BBQ Box – The Food
There is a saying that roughly translates to “give a northeastern Chinese a stove and they can grill the world” and BBQ Box’s menu clearly exemplifies that.
Look at that menu, it has everything you can possibly want to eat. There are grilled meat, starters, grilled seafood, premium skewers, speciality grills, grilled greens and beverages.
To start off the meal, I ordered my favorite Pig Ear with Cucumber 猪耳朵拍黄瓜 [S$10]. It is a crunchy and refreshing cold side dish.
Tofu Fish Fillet Soup 豆花鱼片[S$12.80] comes in a rectangular foil tin with a small burner below to keep it boiling hot. I find it a little too salty for my liking but the fish fillets are fresh with firm texture.
I ordered a couple of grilled items to try:
Each table is equipped with a wooden stove with metal plate on top. This is to keep your grilled foods piping hot throughout your meal. However, the stove on my table doesn’t seem to be working, my food is still cold even though the staff turned on the stove.
If you need some carbohydrates to go with your grilled items, consider getting Dumplings (pork with cabbage 白菜猪肉水饺/shrimp leek and egg 虾仁三鲜水饺/pork with leek 韭菜猪肉水饺) [S$4.80/S$5.80 for 6 pieces, S$7.80/S$8.80 for 12 pieces].
There is a wide range of barbecue and food items to choose from at BBQ Box. The prices are a little pricier than I expected but still manageable.
BBQ Box has its own delivery system, you can order here (it’s all in Chinese though).
