Whenever I bought lunch at Warung Kampung, I saw a long queue at Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak next door.
A quick search revealed that Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak is a hugely popular hawker stall that originated from Boon Lay Place.
It is not only famous for their delicious nasi lemak but also for their late closing hours. Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak is open till 3.30am, satisfying many midnight hunger pangs.
I am thankful that Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak has a stall at the basement of Square 2 @ Novena so I don’t have to travel all the way to Jurong West.
There is (sadly) no seating area so the only option is to takeaway. There is always a long queue during lunch hour but the queue moves pretty quickly.
There are 4 nasi lemak sets to choose from, priced at S$4.50 each:
– Nasi Lemak Chicken Set
– Nasi Lemak Fish Set
– Nasi Lemak Fish Fillet Set
– Nasi Lemak Otah Set
This is the Nasi Lemak Chicken Set [S$4.50]. The serving is extremely generous, the packet was almost bursting.
I like that the coconut rice is still warm when I tucked in with a detectable coconut fragrance.
The sambal is sweeter than I expected and not spicy at all, even a non-spicy like me enjoyed it.
The ikan bilis and peanuts are wonderfully crispy. The fried chicken is nice but definitely not the best I have had. My favorite is still the fried chicken from Hup Lee Fried Bee Hoon in Chong Pang.
You can also order nasi padang with a choice of coconut rice or white rice. Here are a few of the dishes I tried:
The Beef Rendang [S$3.50] is not as tender as those from Warung Kampung but for $3.50 you get 3-4 pieces which is still quite worth it.
The Terung Sambal (Eggplant/Brinjal) is neither too soft nor too hard and the sambal gives it a little sweetness which is nice.
Sotong Hitam [S$3.50] is squid cooked in squid ink. It is non-spicy and fragrant dish.
Sotong Merah [S$3.50] is very spicy, so eat with caution. The sotong is fried with dried shrimp paste and it is very fragrant but very spicy. Tears were rolling down my face and my mouth was numb with the spiciness.
Begedil [S$1] is Indonesian Deep Fried Potato Patty and it is commonly found in Malay stalls. It is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
