Keng Eng Kee – We Are Here Again!

I have been always been a huge fan of anything made with salted egg and the addiction was brought to a whole new level when I had Salted Egg Crab the last time we were at Keng Eng Kee. I recently read a review that Keng Eng Kee serves one of the best salted egg crab in Singapore, so here we are again.
We are here mainly for this – Salted Egg (Fried) Crab 咸蛋(炸)螃蟹. There is more sauce this time round, but I definitely would not mind even more sauce. Creamy, salty and so damn delicious. The crab itself is very fresh and the meat is firm. I am curious how the steamed version would taste like.
Chilli Crab 辣椒螃蟹 is an iconic Singapore dish. The sweet and spicy sauce packs a punch although I find it a little too spicy but who am I to judge when I can’t really take spicy food? We wiped the plate clean with Mantou 馒头. Would you say this is the best chilli crab in Singapore?
Mantou 馒头 are not the bite-sized ones you get at most other restaurants. These are the giants you get at Chinese restaurants. They are better known as hua juan due to the twisted design. They may not look as delicate but they are much more fulfilling and friendly to the wallet-friendly because one of this is equivalent to three of the usual buns.
I was pleasantly surprised by Deep Fry Goby 顺壳. I have always associated fried fish with dry and leathery meat, but the meat is really tender underneath the crispy skin. The soy-based sauce and lard crouton adds to the deliciousness.
“Choy Hiang” Beancurd 菜香豆腐 is simple and reminds me of home. The beancurd is fried till crispy and then combined with hand-chopped minced pork.

Black Pepper Deer Meat 黑椒鹿肉 is not a commonly-found dish in Singapore. The deer meat tastes like chicken, but it is much more tender.

A visit to Keng Eng Kee is not complete without ordering Mingzhu Roll and Prawn Roll 明珠卷和虾枣. Mingzhu Roll is the signature dish that made this restaurant made famous.

We ordered Cuttlefish with Kangkong 鱿鱼应菜 the last time we were here and we liked it so much we ordered it again this time.
No matter how many times you have been to Keng Eng Kee, the quality of food will always impress you. Salted Egg (Fried) Crab, Mingzhu Rolls and Cuttlefish with Kangkong are a few of the must-try dishes here.
