Thank you Lai Chi for inviting me to do a review for the newly-opened stall Lai Chi. Even though this is a sponsored post, I promise to do an honest review.
Lai Chi is located on level 1 of Velocity @ Novena Square, a few stalls away from Wok Hey in Velocity @ Novena Square. The white signage on bright green bamboo background and the green decorations of the stall gives the stall a fresh feel. Unfortunately, it’s a small takeaway stall with no seating area.
The shop is in the process of applying for halal certification. Even though there is no official certification yet, the stall uses no pork no lard in all its dishes.
The Food
Lai Chi specializes in nasi lemak, kueh pie tee and popiah.
There are many choices of nasi lemak available, with prices ranging from S$5.90 to S$8.
Two of the most popular nasi lemak options are Beef Rendang [S$8] and Salted Egg Chicken [S$6.80].
The rice is fluffy but not oily, which sets it apart from other nasi lemak stalls. The greenish color comes from the pandan leaves used to cook the rice.
The beef was tender with good amounts of tendon to make sure it does not become tough. Thick and creamy coconut gravy and spices coats each piece of beef thoroughly.
Fragrant salted egg sauce generously coats each piece of chicken. The chicken skin is not as crispy as I would have liked, after the long journey.
Ikan bilis is perfectly crunchy but the peanuts are slightly overcooked so some of them have a slight bitter taste.
The Popiah [S$3.20 per roll, S$5.80 for 2 rolls; DIY Party Set: S$22 for 8 rolls – S$50 for 20 rolls] here come in sets depending on the number of people. The secret to the perfect popiah lies in those golden nuggets of deep-fried garlic. They really bring out the sweetness of the spring rolls.
The popiah skins are all handmade in their own factory. Sadly there isn’t enough space in the stall to make the popiah skins onsite, it will be so interesting to watch.
The Kueh Pie Tee [S$3.60 for 4 cups; DIY Party Set: S$16 for 15 cups, S$48 for 50] are just as delicious with crunchy savory shells.
It would be perfect if Lai Chi have some seats as popiah and kueh pie tee are best consumed on the spot. Otherwise, Lai Chi is the perfect place to pickup some lunch or dinner.
