I was attending an event in Serangoon area and I decided to have lunch at Bei Fang Ren Jia 北方人家 that I have been wanting to try out. This restaurant specialises in Northeastern and Szechuan cuisine.
The menu (which can be found on their Facebook Page) has only Chinese titles so I took the liberty of coming up with the English names below.
Stove Pot Chicken is one of their signature dish which originated from Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui area in China. However, I was in a rush so the staff suggested that I order Signature Aluminium Foil Chick 特色锡纸小公鸡 [S$16] which is another signature dish of the restaurant.
The chicken inside are cut into small bite-size pieces which have clearly been deep-fried before baking in aluminium foil . These bite-size chicken pieces are perfectly crispy and coated with a sweet sauce that is super addictive.
Signature Poached Lotus Root in Vinegar Dressing 特色炝藕片 [S$8] originated from Shandong. The lotus roots are poached and tossed in a tangy vinegar dressing and served as a cold dish. The lotus roots are crunchy and refreshing, which helps to cut through the greasiness from the chicken dish above.
Dongbei Liangpi is not in the menu but it is such a common dish that every respectable Northeast Chinese restaurant knows how to make it.
