Dumplings is a food staple in China and there are dumpling speciality restaurants all over China. But I have not heard of shops specializing in dumplings outside of China. When a colleague told me about DaXi, a restaurant from Taiwan that specializes in dumplings, it quipped my curiosity and I decided to find out if it’s any good.
DaXi has two restaurants In VivoCity and Ang Mo Kio Hub but I checked out the newly-opened DaXi takeaway kiosk at Novena Square.
DaXi – The Food
This is DaXi (Novena Square) menu. As this is only a takeaway kiosk, there are only 3 types of dumplings and Taiwanese Lu Rou Fan available. The full-fledged restaurants at VivoCity and Ang Mo Kio Hub also offers noodle dishes and pancakes.
DaXi offers three flavors of dumplings – Original Pork 原汁原味 [S$8.80 for 5 pieces], Smoked Duck 香薰鸭肉 [S$9.80 for 5 pieces] and Chives & Pork 韭心包喜 [S$8.80 for 5 pieces].
Original Pork and Chives & Pork are common dumpling flavors, I recommend getting Smoked Duck dumplings. The slight smokiness and saltiness from the smoked duck works surprisingly well.
There is also Pork Dumpling with Fragrant Mala Sauce 麻辣红油拌饺子 [S$9.80] for the spicy-loving folks.
It’s ironic that the Taiwanese Lu Rou Fan 飘香卤肉饭 [S$4.80] is the cheapest yet the most filling. The pork is perfectly braised with just enough fats to melt in your mouth. In fact, it is so good that I finished the whole bowl before realizing that I forgot to take a photograph.
Chilled Mango Coconut Pudding 芒果椰汁布丁 is a little disappointing. The coconut pudding is watery and not milky enough and the mango cubes does little to add sweetness to the dessert.
Conclusion
Although DaXi’s dumplings are slightly more expensive than others, but I won’t mind occasionally going back for the Smoked Duck dumplings.
