It has been many months since I last time last had ramen at Hakkata Ikkousha Ramen (CHIJMES) so I was delighted to find Ramen Ichiro at the basement of Clementi Mall.
Ramen Ichiro specializes in Jiro-style ramen which was invented in the 60s. Jiro-style ramen was so popular in Japan it has an avid fan base who call themselves Jirorians.
Jiro-style ramen is characterized by huge portions, which you can experience by ordering Ichiro Ramen [S$10.90] and Jiro Ramen [S$9.90]. If Jiro-style ramen is too much for you, there are also other smaller-size ramen to choose from such as Cha Shu Ramen [$7.90]. The thick tonkotsu broth with thin straight noodles and pieces of cha shu makes for a satisfying and filling meal.
Tsukemen is ramen eaten after dipping in a separate bowl of soup or broth. This is Cha Shu Tsukemen [S$12.90] where the broth is covered by a crusty buttery bread covering. I like tearing off the bread covering and soaking it in the broth which makes for an excellent appetizer.
The noodles used for tsukemen are thicker than those used in normal ramen. The ramen are more springy and has a more chewy texture.
Mentai Tofu [S$6.90] is a little disappointing. The mentaiko sauce and the tofu does not melt in taste, they are like two separate dishes.
Crispy Gyoza (5 pieces) [S$3.90] is not spectacular but it’s comforting. The pork filling inside is moist and tender.
The silky creamy Custard Pudding [S$4.90] is the perfect dessert to end the meal.
