Ramen Ichiro – Jiro Style Ramen in Clementi Mall

Ramen Ichiro - Restaurant FrontIt has been many months since I last time last had ramen at Hakkata Ikkousha Ramen (CHIJMES) so I was delighted to find Ramen Ichiro at the basement of Clementi Mall.

Ramen Ichiro specializes in Jiro-style ramen which was invented in the 60s. Jiro-style ramen was so popular in Japan it has an avid fan base who call themselves Jirorians.

Ramen Ichiro - Cha Shu RamenJiro-style ramen is characterized by huge portions, which you can experience by ordering Ichiro Ramen [S$10.90] and Jiro Ramen [S$9.90]. If Jiro-style ramen is too much for you, there are also other smaller-size ramen to choose from such as Cha Shu Ramen [$7.90]. The thick tonkotsu broth with thin straight noodles and pieces of cha shu makes for a satisfying and filling meal.

Ramen Ichiro - Potpie Tsukemen Top ViewTsukemen is ramen eaten after dipping in a separate bowl of soup or broth. This is Cha Shu Tsukemen [S$12.90] where the broth is covered by a crusty buttery bread covering. I like tearing off the bread covering and soaking it in the broth which makes for an excellent appetizer.

Ramen Ichiro - Potpie TsukemenThe noodles used for tsukemen are thicker than those used in normal ramen. The ramen are more springy and has a more chewy texture.

Ramen Ichiro - Mentai TofuMentai Tofu [S$6.90] is a little disappointing. The mentaiko sauce and the tofu does not melt in taste, they are like two separate dishes.

Ramen Ichiro - Crispy GyozaCrispy Gyoza (5 pieces) [S$3.90] is not spectacular but it’s comforting. The pork filling inside is moist and tender.

Ramen Ichiro - Custard PuddingThe silky creamy Custard Pudding [S$4.90] is the perfect dessert to end the meal.
